Tea Party hosts City of Chico Fire Chief Bill Hack – find out how Fire Department will spend $5.3M grant – be sure to ask him how he will pay for those new boots when the grant runs out

25 Feb

Chico Tea Party meeting Tuesday 2/25/14 @ 7pm, Marie Callender restaurant at 1910 20th Street (at the Chico Mall)

“Fire Department Status and open questions with Bill Hack Division Chief Chico Fire”
Learn about the $5.3M Grant that just past City Council.

Sheesh, there’s just not enough time in the day to bitch about stuff.  NO, I’m not happy about the new grant for the fire department. First of all, that’s our money – why don’t people get that? Second, we don’t need more stupes in boots to sit down at the fire station breathing their own farts or endangering our lives using their sirens to run stop lights. And, last but hardly least – when this grant runs out, they will kick and scream that they need more funding from the city to pay the extra guys they hired with the grant.

We’ve been here before – who keeps eating the bread crumbs? The city of Chico just keeps running in the same circles.

I will not have a chance to attend, but these meetings are open to the public. I’d recommend being on time, they usually have an interesting program for 20 minutes or so, and then the speaker is given the floor, and will accept questions from the general audience. Also, they open the room at 5:30 for dinner, I believe, if you want to make an evening of it. The wait staff there is very professional, and you can have drinks during the program. Please be sure to tip nice, these guys and gals work hard on their feet all day.

Thanks for doing this Tea Party!  In future I will try to remember to post all their events, sorry to be so slow to get this up.

When that grant runs out how is the city going to afford to keep those tax eaters around?

    Just check out this…

City of Chico, samples taken from 2011:

    Fire Captain – $292,860
    City Attorney – $264,640
    Division Chief – $240,097
    Police Sergeant – $237,254
    Fire Apparatus Engineer – $210,103
    General Services Dir. – $204,081
    Fire Prevention Officer – 209,417
    City Clerk – $198,173
    Police LT. – $192,817

I tells ya I shudda been a gummit worker…I’d be the best tax eater there ever was or ever will be…

Plunder: How Public Employee Unions are Raiding Treasuries, Controlling Our Lives and Bankrupting the Nation

Public employees have become the new American elite. In the past, Government workers earned less money but had slightly better job security and benefits than Americans working in the private sector. These days, government workers not only earn more than other Americans, but they have vastly superior benefits, including pension plans that often allow them to retire as early as age 50 with 100 percent or more of their final year’s salary. These pensions often to $100,000 a year and come with cost of living adjustments and free lifetime medical care. Getting a government job and sticking with it is like winning the lottery. This plundering of treasuries, made possible by aggressive union tactics and spineless politicians, results in higher taxes and massive debts that ultimately will be borne by our grandchildren. The current situation is “unsustainable.” The problem goes beyond finances. Government unions protect even the worst public employees from accountability. Schools don’t attempt to fire incompetent teachers-and union protections make it nearly impossible to even fire ones accused of abuse and other misdeeds. As government gets bigger and more powerful, government officials have more uncontrolled power over the rest of us-to enrich and protect themselves at the expense of the public good. The public’s servants have truly become the public’s masters.

Thanks Bill, although, I’m sorry I could hardly finish your post without puking!

I’ve been looking at the state controller’s website, and I just found something yesterday that I’d never noticed before – if it had been a snake, it would have bit me! I’ve struggled the past couple of years to understand the whole pension time bomb, to understand the contracts written in legalese, to understand all the fucking acronyms – Employer Paid Member Contribution being my fave. And only yesterday I saw when and how it happened – and who is responsible, including Mark Sorensen.

Here’s the link to the State Controllers website pay chart:

Choose Chico (either on the map or key it in), and then look at the years from 2009 – 2012. In 2010, the city was paying about $6.5 million in employee pensions and benefits. Mark Sorensen was elected in 2010. In 2011, that figure suddenly jumped to $14.5 million. By 2012, even though we’d shed some 50 employees, we were paying over $15 million in pensions and benefits. This will not change under the new contracts, which mandate that NEW employees pay 50 percent of their share, but employees from within the system will continue to pay only 9 percent. The city of Chico just hired two employees – one out of the academy, one from city of Oroville – in fact, as I’ve watched, most of their cop and fire hires come from other agencies, very seldom fresh recruits. So, I am not impressed with Constantin’s figures regarding savings – they are pissant compared to that jump in benefits payments.

I don’t know if Sorensen signed those contracts, I’ll have to find out. But you can bet your bottom dollar Gruendl and Goloff signed them, they need to go.

Well hang on because CalPERS is increasing the amount of ‘contribution’ (that means the cost to taxpayers) in coming years.

I know – they send notices to the city and other entities like CARD on a regular basis, upping the amount that needs to be paid, but with no direction as to who should pay it. It’s our council that rolls over again and again agreeing to pay it, the employees should be paying it, but Sorensen, Morgan and Gruendl are all beholden to the safety unions, Schwab is union, Goloff is union – the majority of our council are union maids and that’s how they vote.
