Unbridled greed seems to be in vogue this season!

26 Feb

I was sorry to see the Butte County Supervisors vote to raise salaries at the sheriff’s department by 5 percent. They had to eliminate four positions to do it, at the same time they are implementing Measure A. They say they want to make the job more attractive to new recruits, but cut positions.

You know the old saying – “If it smells like horse puckey, it probably is…”

I’ve long heard, from people I know in the sheriff’s department, that they’ve had a gripe with Chico PD, whose salaries have been a lot higher for years. Instead of joining the movement to bring police salaries, and benefits and pensions, back into a reasonable range, the sheriff’s department has jumped on the chuck wagon. They’ve been eating steak, believe me – now they want caviar.

Meanwhile, Chico PD fights to get their salaries even higher. They also are asking for five percent raises, and I’m guessing they will get them. Along with plenty of other perks and benies. Alot of benies.

They’ve mounted their typical campaign – “Crime is on the rise in Chico!” This is the same dog and pony show they trot out every time their contracts are on the table. Recognize the pattern here?

Get your yard ready, we will have to mount a campaign against the sales tax increase that will be proposed for the 2016 ballot. It will be interesting to see who brings it up.

A couple days ago, the Sheriff Dept went door to door in Thermalito with deputies and code enforcement officers to “educate” residents about Measure A.

What a waste of time and resources. Certainly the deputies have something better to do with their time. Additionally the County hired new code enforcement officers and spent two weeks training them specifically to enforce Measure A.

It’s also an insult to the people of that community, since the implication is that they are all pot growers.

I saw a bit on the news about that, and I was shocked for all the reasons you mention.

It seemed a little (hmmm) racist too, given the Hmong translator. It was annoying that the camera person was allowed along – implying that these people, faces shown on camera, are pot growers.

And to think they just forced through a plan to cut positions, take on more overtime, so they can have salary increases, which of course lead to an increase in their benefits and pension, for which they pay less than 10 percent of the cost.

Sheesh, this pot thing may work out better for the county than they are willing to admit. It sure works out for the sheriff’s department.

What’s with this sudden reefer madness? They seem to use these issues to their benefit, don’t they? What ever happened to all those crank labs Mike Ramsey claimed were being run in abandoned cars along rural roadways? He got a $1 on our car registration for that, and I have yet to see one story about an abandoned car being used as a crank lab. Is the media asleep here?

Reminds me of that old Burt Reynolds’ classic, “White Lightening.” We should make a spoof here – “Green Gold!” Unfortunately Jerry Reed has died years ago and is probably no longer available to play Mike Ramsey.

The Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force has always put a lot more effort on marijuana, than other seemingly more dangerous drugs.

      I hear that.

We recently had that Enloe employee, who was caught driving around at night, abducting and drugging young women with prescription narcotics he got illegally from Enloe Hospital, and there’s been no investigation into Enloe Hospital by Butte County DA?

But all I’ve heard over the last couple of years is this war on marijuana. Maureen Kirk said she didn’t want outsiders to know Chico as “where they grow pot,” but I’d hate to ask, well, what do outsiders know about Chico Maureen? Number One Party School! Alcohol deaths. Disgusting pigs take to the river every year. Sexual assaults involving both kids so drunk, it’s hard to figure out who’s the victim. That, my dear Mo-reen, is what Chico is known for.
